What’s hot in 2026?

With every new year comes a fresh set of travel trends, along with subtle shifts in how we see clients travelling (and of course planning) their trips. If 2025 was the year of renewed momentum, 2026 is definitely shaping up to be one of considered travel, with trips that feel well-judged and paced. That could mean taking things slower and building in time to soak up every last ounce of a destination; travelling in less popular shoulder or green season times; and curating experiences that feel genuinely authentic (and aren’t just for the photos).

As travel specialists ourselves, we always find trends useful. They offer a framework for shaping itineraries that feel current, and for packaging those itineraries in a way that clients can immediately understand and get excited about

Below are the travel shifts we’re seeing for 2026, plus practical ways to translate each one into sellable trips using what you already have in Waybird.

Space becomes part of the experience

In 2025, it became clear that many clients were becoming increasingly sensitive to how a place feels and not just how it looks in photos. The best trips in 2026 are the ones that give clients room to breathe and really get under the skin of a destination – think travel designed around the shoulder or green season, trips framed around landscapes, wildlife cycles, festivals and weather patterns, and building in time to breathe.

How can Waybird help?

The same destinations can feel completely different depending on the time of year, routing, and where you choose to base your clients. Using Waybird, build two versions of the same trip – one during the classic season and one in the shoulder or green season – and help your clients really understand the differences.

You could also showcase a third option that slows things down even more, perhaps pairing an iconic stop with a second region that feels more off-the-beaten-track, or slowing things down with two bases instead of four, with longer stays and less logistics taking up time.

Use the additional content sections to craft a paragraph about the rhythm of the trip and show clients you’ve thought about the pace of their trip and why you’ve chosen what you have.

Leave intentional whitespace in the day-by-day itinerary, showing clients that there is time to relax, breathe – and also to spend longer doing something they love.

Family travel is evolving beyond just “kid-friendly”

Families are increasingly travelling in more creative – and larger! – groups: grandparents with grandchildren, blended and multigenerational families, adult kids joining parents, and friends who are basically family.

At the same time, families with older kids and teens are looking for trips that feel grown-up, and not simply filled with the traditional ‘child-friendly’ activities. We all know that multi-gen travel can prove tricky to organise. How do you even begin to satisfy everyone from age 7 to 70?! The opportunity here is to build itineraries that have space for everyone: shared moments that feel special but also enough flexibility so that different energy levels don’t have to compromise.

How can Waybird help?

Use the itinerary-builder to present different activity options for each day, for example, experiences that can be done together, free time, and optional add-ons.

In the same vein, offer different ‘levels’ of activities, for example a short easy bush walk one morning, but a longer, more advanced walk the next.

Build itineraries with different accommodation options. Perhaps your client thinks that an exclusive-use villa or lodge would be too expensive, but the pricing (and the photos!) might show them otherwise.

Store family-proof copy blocks in your content library whenever you come across helpful information. This could include rooming logic and configurations, flexible activities and age limits, and even just unique and one-off activities.

Night skies and after-dark experiences

There’s something incredibly humbling about being outside at night in the right landscape. Perhaps because it pulls people out of their usual rhythm — away from screens and schedules and routines — and replaces it with scale. Even the simplest setting (a blanket, a warm drink and a guide pointing out constellations) becomes memorable because it’s so far from everyday life.

For many clients, it ends up being the moment they talk about long after the trip. When designing itineraries in 2026, this means stargazing, desert skies, nocturnal wildlife, evening boat trips, fireside storytelling and detailed astronomy sessions.

How Waybird can help

Write one strong paragraph for each of your hero night-sky experiences and reuse it across proposals to save time when creating new itineraries.

Showcase optional upgrades for experiences your clients may never have considered: private stargazing setups, dinners under the stars, and even night game drives and wildlife-watching.

Store a best dark-sky regions list inside your content library for quick recommendations, for example Namibia’s NamibRand Reserve (the only official International DarkSky Reserve in Africa), Lapalala Wilderness (a DarkSky Park) and Chile’s Atacama Desert and Elqui Valley.

Pair night-sky moments with slow mornings the next day to reassure the clients that it won’t take time out of their itinerary – and they can rest if they need to!

Sustainable & purpose-driven travel with substance

If 2025 introduced the conservation conversation, 2026 is about substance when it comes to purpose-driven travel. Clients are becoming more interested in what actually goes on behind the scenes, but that doesn’t mean to say they don’t want beauty, comfort and ease – they just want to know that the places they stay, the guides they spend time with, and the experiences you recommend are grounded in integrity. Our role as travel specialists is to filter out the performative options and sniff out the ones that feel genuinely authentic.

How can Waybird help?

Add a short section to your itinerary explaining how you choose partners and experiences (vetted, respectful and locally rooted), to build trust without being preachy.

Use your content library to store the best impact notes you come across so you can reuse accurate language across proposals. This could include things like what a lodge protects, what a project funds and how a community partnership works in practice.

Present purpose-led experiences with specific details, like who your clients will meet, what the experience involves, what it supports, and why it matters. Go one step further by naming the experience and avoiding generic labels like “community visit.”

Use your content library to store the best conservation and community based experiences and personalise it with your own in-depth knowledge on these initiatives.

Personalisation and the human touch

It goes without saying that most clients want travel that feels like it has been designed exclusively for them. They’re looking for trips shaped around preferences that are often subtle: how they like to spend a morning, how much structure they enjoy, what kind of energy they want in a place, what they consider worth it and what they actively dislike.

In 2026, the travel specialist’s edge is judgement. Not just knowing what’s good, but knowing what will be right for this client in particular and being able to translate that into an itinerary that reads clearly, looks great and makes decision-making easy.

How can Waybird help?

Use the itinerary to reflect back what you’ve learned about the client: add small, well-placed notes that show you’ve listened – things like late starts that you have intentionally built in, minimal packing and unpacking, time set aside for photography etc.

Build two or three variants of the same trip with different pacing, different bases, different accommodation styles so clients can choose a direction without starting from scratch.

Use the additional content sections to make the itinerary feel curated rather than a template. You could include a short, personal introduction and some notes along the way, detailing why you chose that specific activity or hotel.

What all of these trends have in common is intentionality. Whether it’s choosing the right season, designing for multiple generations, or building in time to stare up at the stars, the trips that stand out in 2026 are the ones that feel genuinely considered. And that’s where your expertise matters most.

The reality is that crafting this level of detail used to take days of back-and-forth, multiple versions, and hours spent formatting proposals that clients might not even open. Waybird gives you the tools to translate what you know about your clients and your destinations into polished, professional itineraries.

Before using Waybird, Ololo Safaris was losing deals simply because they couldn’t respond quickly enough. Proposal creation was eating entire mornings, and payment collection felt like a part-time job.

Within 10 days of switching, everything changed. Proposal turnaround dropped from 3-4 days to same day. Conversion rates jumped from 25% to 45%. Payment processing that used to take 7-10 days now happens within 24 hours. The result? 31% revenue growth, 15 hours reclaimed each week, and a 20% increase in average booking value.

This is how they did it.

Who are you and what does your company do?

We’re the founders of Ololo Safaris, where we create intimate, conservation-focused safari experiences across East Africa. We’re not about ticking boxes or racing through parks — we design journeys for travelers who want to slow down, connect deeply with the wilderness, and understand the delicate balance between wildlife, communities, and conservation. For us, that means fewer vehicles, longer stays, and guides who not only tell you what you’re seeing, but why it matters for the future of the continent.

What challenge led you to look for a new platform?

Our biggest frustration was the disconnect between the magic we create on the ground and the clunky process of getting clients there. I’d spend entire afternoons formatting proposals, juggling WhatsApp messages with lodge managers, and tracking payments on spreadsheets that would make an accountant weep. Meanwhile, competitors with slicker systems were winning business simply because they replied faster. I was sure there must be a better, more streamlined way of doing things.

Why did you choose Waybird over alternatives?

Waybird understood that we’re selling dreams and not just trying to get bums in beds. With some other platforms we tried it felt a little like glorified booking engines, but Waybird let us showcase each journey with space to tell stories and add our own content and images. Plus, the payment integration meant I could finally stop being a part-time debt collector. But honestly? It was seeing our first proposal in Waybird that sold me. It looked like something Apple would design for safaris.

How quickly were you up and running?

We went from skeptical to converted in 10 days. The platform is ridiculously intuitive — my assistant figured out most features before I’d finished my coffee. We sent our first Waybird proposal on day three and closed the sale on day four.

Jim Chapman & Charley Chapman, Founders of Ololo Safaris

How has Waybird changed your proposal creation process?

I used to block out entire mornings for proposal creation. Now, I can craft something beautiful during a lunch break. The real shift though is how much time I now have to be creative — instead of wrestling with formatting, I can focus on personalizing each journey and really tailoring each aspect to what my guests want. My proposals now read like love letters to Africa rather than procurement documents!

What about payments and collections?

Game-changer doesn’t even cover it. We’ve gone from sending banking details via three different emails (and praying they work) to having clients pay instantly with their preferred method. The automated payment reminders are so polite yet persistent that I’ve actually had clients apologize for being late. That never happened with my awkward follow-up emails.

How has it impacted your conversion rate?

We’ve jumped from converting maybe one in four enquiries to nearly half. Speed is part of it (we’re often first to respond now) but it’s also the experience. Clients can virtually walk through their safari before booking and they’re emotionally invested before they’ve even paid the deposit.

Has your average booking value changed?

It’s up by about 20%. Waybird makes it so easy to showcase add-ons that clients are now choosing experiences they wouldn’t have known to ask for. From cultural visits with the people from the Hadzabe tribe to practical helicopter transfers, they see it, they want it… and then they book it.

What operational time savings have you seen?

I’ve reclaimed about 15 hours a week. I can now spend so much more time on what actually matters — building relationships with new camps, training guides, or occasionally remembering I have a family. My wife sends her thanks to Waybird!

Can you quantify the revenue impact?

We’ve grown revenue by 31% in one year, but more importantly, we’ve grown sustainably. We’re not just booking more trips; we’re booking better trips with clients who truly get what we’re about.

Let’s talk numbers—what are the key before and after metrics?

Proposal turnaround: 3-4 days → same day

Enquiry conversion: 25% → 45%

Payment processing time: 7-10 days → 24 hours

Weekly admin hours: 25 → 10

Client revision requests: 3-4 per booking → 1-2 per booking

Which Waybird features have been most impactful?

The visual itinerary builder lets clients see their journey unfold like a story; the images are big, powerful and really give clients an idea of what they are going to experience. The multi-currency payments have eliminated those “what’s the exchange rate today?” panic moments. Mobile optimization means I can make updates from my phone in the bush. And the template library means consistency without sacrificing creativity.

Any surprises or unexpected benefits?

Clients now share their itineraries with friends like they’re showing off Instagram posts. That social proof has generated more referral business than any marketing campaign we’ve run. Also, my stress levels have plummeted. Turns out, not constantly worrying about admin makes you a better safari planner. Who knew?

What hesitations did you have initially?

I’m old school. I like printed maps and handwritten safari notes. I worried we’d lose our personal touch by going digital. Instead, digitizing the boring stuff has given us more time for the personal touches that actually matter.

What advice would you give someone just starting with Waybird?

Don’t overthink it. Start with one killer template for your most popular trip, make it absolutely sing, then build from there. And use the payment scheduling feature from day one — your cash flow will thank you.

What feedback have clients given?

“Professional but not corporate” is my favorite review. Clients feel like they’re booking with experts who know their destination like the back of their hands but who also happen to have their act together technology-wise. Several have mentioned they chose us specifically because our proposals felt premium and sophisticated.

What’s the ROI?

We covered Waybird’s cost in the first two months. Everything since has been profit and peace of mind, both of which are equally valuable in my book.

What’s next for you with Waybird?

Like most industries, travel is shaped by trends. Some are slow-burning whilst others seemingly emerge overnights thanks to tech breakthroughs and the latest social media trends. This year, 2025, it’s seemingly no longer just about where people want to travel, but why they are travelling in the first place. From deeper personal meaning to bolder, more creative itineraries, wanderlust is certainly evolving…

At Waybird, we’ve been keeping a close eye on the trends shaping the 2025–2026 travel season and beyond. If you’re an independent travel advisor or running your own travel business, understanding what’s next is key to staying competitive.

Waybird gives you the smart tech and time-saving tools to thrive in the digital age and turn these trends into seamless, bookable journeys. Because let’s face it: the best trips don’t just get posted on Instagram, they become the kind of stories talked about at dinner parties for years to come – and ensure a steady flow of repeat guests!

Emerging travel trends for 2025/2026 and beyond

1. Cultural immersion and community-driven connections

Travellers are increasingly looking for more than just a destination to visit and a pretty picture to take. Instead, connection and meaningful, immersive experiences that offer personal growth and a deep connection and understanding of different destinations are the name of the game. Think learning ancient tracking techniques from the San bushmen in Botswana, learning how to make a spicy bánh xèo in a Vietnamese cooking class, or trying your hand at a traditional paper-making workshop in Madagascar. Cultural deep dives like these are an incredible way to engage with a destination’s history, heritage and culture, far beyond what the guidebooks will tell you…

2. Ecotourism escapes and the rise of conscious travel

Far from being simply a ‘nice to have’, sustainability is fast becoming a non-negotiable when it comes to travel. Travellers are actively looking for trips that will minimise their footprints on the land (and in the air) and make a positive impact, whether that’s staying in a carbon-conscious hotel or choosing a safari lodge with electric vehicles. And there’s conservation projects and vetted voluntourism opportunities for those who really want to get their hands dirty and give back in the most powerful way possible. And, alongside this, is a conscious move towards slower travel with many choosing deeper immersion and more gentle experiences over jam-packed checklists.

As a travel advisor, there’s a real opportunity to stand out by curating conscious, eco-adventures that matter, including tacking cheetah in Namibia, paddling through the Amazon, or mountain biking in Costa Rica’s jungles. With Waybird, you’ve got access to our vetted, planet-friendly itineraries and partners that will make it happen.

3. Spiritual journeys are on the rise

Sometimes the most unforgettable journeys are the ones we take inward, rather than to a physical destination and Waybird travel advisors have seen a real increase in getaways that support mind, body and soul – spiritual journeys in search of inner peace, if you like. Where it’s descending into the rock-hewn churches in Ethiopia’s Lalibela, walking a pilgrimage path to Chimi lhakhang Temple in Bhutan, or following Holy Week processions in the Colombian city of Popayán, more and more people are seeking transformative travel experiences with heart.

These kinds of trips require sensitivity, local insight and thoughtful planning, all things that Waybird advisors are uniquely equipped to offer. When done well, these journeys create moments of awe and clarity that will remain with travellers long after their return home.

4. In search of wellness and rejuvenation

Beyond traditional R&R (because a holidays should always include a dose!), wellness travel is evolving. From functional nutrition and forest-bathing to mindfulness practices and digital detoxes, travellers are desperate to escape our modern, beeping lives for journeys that restore, reset and prioritise mental wellbeing. We’re talking yoga and meditation retreats in India, forest bathing in Japan, star gazing in the Atacama Desert or simply switching off in style in the wilds of Africa.

At the same time, mid-career sabbaticals are on the rise, with many travellers booking trips and time off to reflect and reprioritise careers, life – or both! And then of course, there’s the “workation” with destinations like Cape Town, Bali and Buenos Aires top of the list for those chasing fast Wi-Fi by day and vibrant explorations by night.

5. Specialisation is the new status symbol

Today’s travellers are often looking for something specific when it comes to travel – something personal, perhaps, or something wildly niche in a lesser-known gem. For some, that means escaping the Insta-crowds and heading off the beaten path where no-one has ventured before them but for others, it’s all about chasing the latest in pop culture: think “set-jetters” booking trips to Sicily or Thailand to visit the iconic The White Lotus locales, or heading to the Scottish Highlands to walk in Outlander’s footsteps.

There’s also a renewed fascination with nature-centric adventures, witnessing the Northern Lights, for example, or timing a trip around a solar eclipse or a wildlife migration. These travel experiences often require seasonal planning, but also make up a good portion of spontaneous last-minute trips.

How we accidentally developed a platform that revolutionises the hosted travel advisor model

Waybird’s story begins in 2014, when we launched Timbuktu – a travel-tech company specialising in multi-destination trips to some of the most remote and inspiring corners of the world (Africa, Asia, Latin America, and beyond).

Over the years, we’ve navigated the challenges of building a brand, weathered the storms of Covid, and found ways to scale our business in a rapidly changing landscape.

Building a travel company is complicated

As we grew Timbuktu, we found ourselves running into the same frustrations many independent travel advisors face today. For our team of travel advisors, the tools for planning and selling travel were fragmented, only solving pieces of the puzzle. And when it came to showcasing complex, multi-destination itineraries, the content just wasn’t compelling enough.

So, we took the plunge and decided to build our own tools and technology to streamline the process of designing and selling trips. And, along the way, we realised something important: we weren’t alone.

Independent travel advisors across the world face the same challenges every day. And now, we knew we could help.

The deeper we explored the opportunity, the clearer the need for a new kind of host agency became. One built specifically for modern travel advisors who want more control, more profit, and more time creating spectacular travel itineraries without the added admin.

In 2022, we made that technology, content and infrastructure available to independent advisors and operators. Today it comes two ways. Waybird Lite and Core (from USD 199 a month) are the software on its own, for operators already set up to run their own business. Waybird Hosted is the host-agency membership: guests contract with Waybird under our booking terms, we handle supplier payments and insurance, and you keep 80% of the margin on every trip.

Say hello to Waybird: A platform that brings the traditional travel agency model into the digital age

The traditional model of booking hotels and tours on behalf of clients and collecting commission after travel is one that many advisors know well. It works perfectly well for simple trips, but when you’re handling complex itineraries with multiple moving parts (flights, accommodations, experiences, transfers, DMCs, etc.), it becomes cumbersome.

Not to mention:

Commissions are paid months (sometimes years!) after booking.

Margins are often dictated by hotel rates, limiting earning potential.

Managing supplier payments in multiple currencies creates headaches.

A client’s experience can feel fragmented.

Creativity and freedom to curate a cohesive, seamless tour experience is stunted.

Having built our own successful tour operator, we were well aware of all of these sticking points. Waybird is a way for independent advisors to plug into our infrastructure – and take advantage of our years of expertise – without becoming fully-fledged tour operators themselves.

With Waybird, you can:

Offer clients a seamless, “one-price” packaged experience.

Tap into our network of vetted DMCs and suppliers, with preferential rates to boost your margins (or use your own, if you prefer).

Set your own pricing and control your profit.

Get paid your share of the margin once the trip travels, without chasing a supplier, and qualify for early payout after your first few bookings.

On Hosted, leave the supplier payments and insurance to us: guests contract with Waybird, we pay the DMCs and lodges direct, and you’re covered by our insurance.

Build and operate your own brand with our full back-office support.

Waybird is a fully integrated platform – no more juggling tools

Most travel advisor tech is disjointed. You might use one platform to build proposals, another to accept payments, a third to create invoices, and a fourth to manage bookings.

At Waybird, we’ve solved this fragmentation with a fully integrated platform that’s built specifically for multi-destination travel.

In one simple system, you can:

Create stunning, personalised proposals in just 5 minutes.

Accept client payments seamlessly.

Automatically generate invoices, receipts, and essential post-booking documents.

Manage client communication and admin with ease.

The result?

A 2x increase in booking conversion rates and up to a 70% reduction in admin time, allowing you to handle more inquiries and grow your business faster.

Waybird makes multi-destination travel simple

Designing and quoting complex, multi-destination trips is one of the most rewarding, but a time-consuming part of an advisor’s job. Between supplier negotiations, availability checks, and endless back-and-forth emails, it can feel overwhelming.

That’s why we built live availability and dynamic pricing directly into the Waybird platform. As you build a travel itinerary, you’ll get real-time estimated pricing and availability for hotels, flights, transfers, and more. This will help you deliver faster quotes and ultimately, convert more clients.

Waybird’s curated content inspires… and converts

We learned the hard way that most destination and property content out there is pretty generic. Your clients don’t want fluff, they want the why. Why should they choose this tented camp in the Serengeti over that one? When is the best time to go gorilla and chimp trekking or to visit Cape Town? What is special about this lodge in Patagonia over the hundreds of others?

With Waybird, travel advisors have access to our growing library of over 3,000 handpicked hotels, experiences, and itineraries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. If the lodge or destination isn’t available yet, you can easily add and create your own, anywhere in the world.

Our content is trusted and curated by independent researchers and travel journalists. It’s designed to help you inspire clients and close sales. And it’s fun, quirky and a little bit different.

Empowering travel advisors to sell smarter, earn faster, and create effortlessly

At Waybird, we believe independent travel advisors deserve more: more freedom, more profit, and more time to craft incredible trips for their clients.

We’re here to help you build your business, your way. See how Waybird Hosted works, or start a 14-day trial of the software.
